Episcopal Church of the Epiphany

3101 Waters Ave, Savannah, GA 31404, United States

Join James for an 8-week session of Emergent Writing. First, learn the technique of Emergent Writing. A clear pool reveals its depths. Use Emergent Writing to find your inner clarity—the clarity of your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, subconscious images, and symbols. Explore in-class exercises that get you beyond the surface.

Then hone your craft. Learn the skills that help you best express your thoughts, feelings, and perceptions to reach your readers at a deeper level. Learn 4D characterization, voice vs. style, and maximizing the power of your sentences.

Also, learn about publishing, literary agents, and discuss the writing life with people who are living it.

Clarity & Craft is open to writers at all levels and of all genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and dramatic scripts.

  • I just wanted to drop a note about how much Emergent Writing has actively changed my life for the better these past few weeks. I really wanted to express to you that these exercises have opened my mind in ways I've been too afraid to explore in the past. Every therapist I've had wanted me to journal, but I claimed that I did enough thinking about my emotions and why I was feeling them and didn't need to write all of it down. The truth is that I was afraid to go down certain paths because I didn't know how to unpack what I'd find, and I didn't have a solid journaling structure that felt useful. Emergent Writing, on the other hand, completely unlocked these gates in my mind and allowed me to safely explore the more intense stuff…I'm so much more open and enthusiastic talking about topics that I used to avoid. Thank you so much for introducing this technique into my life! It really has made a massive positive difference, and I truly appreciate your instruction.

  • Six months ago, all I wanted was to edit ten-year-old blog posts about going through breast cancer treatment to share with close family and a few friends.  Now, due to James Lough’s workshop, I’m writing a true memoir of my experience to share with the world.  James’ classes combine practical techniques, personalized feedback that is precise and actionable, and lots of encouragement to find your voice.  He has taught me how to shape ideas, bring characters to life and write vivid scenes to draw readers into my story.  James creates a caring learning space to spread your wings and achieve your goals.  I highly recommend him to anyone who wants to see measurable improvement in their writing.

  • James helped me build the “craft,” or the art into my writing. With the help of his thoughtful, weekly exercises, there is a noticeable lift in the quality and flow of the work I hope to publish. The opportunity to be critiqued by James and the greater class is a wonderful sounding board for any writer at any level.

  • James' writing class is wonderful! He guides the group with a light but highly skilled touch that helps us delve deeper into our thinking, feeling, and consequently, into our writing.  I also much appreciate the writing skills training and very helpful feedback he provides for our writing submissions, as well as the way group feedback is targeted and constructive, not just "feel good". This class has helped dissolve my prior writer's block, and I encourage all writers looking to deepen their writing skills in a fun group atmosphere, to try it!
